Lately, I seem to be mesmerized by all things glass. Glass bottles, glass pickling jars, sea glass...
and now Vintage Glass Floats....
Back in November, I was at my favorite flea market... A vendor caught my eye with his basket of vintage glass floats... {At least I think they are vintage}... Some were blue, some were green and there were all shades in between.
I've seen reproduction floats in some catalogs but never priced them. This vendor was asking $20 for the large size which seemed like a great price...
I'm okay with buying reproduction items from catalogs but not when the real thing is cheaper!
So, I decided to make an impulse purchase and bought this beautiful green float...
I liked this float because
it had all sorts of bubbles in the glass
and lots of imperfections...
but most of all, I loved the attached rope....
All different sizes of rope
are woven around my glass treasure...
It looks vintage to me...
and for $20, I'm not too worried.
To be honest, as much as I love this float (and I do love it), I have had trouble deciding where to place it.... I have two teenagers, and a large dog, not to mention Mr. AntiqueChase at my house... and I didn't want this this treasure to get broken. I was a bit concerned that my son (or his teenage friends) might pick it up and toss it like a football...
It seemed to be moving from room to room, looking for the perfect {safe} spot....
and then it hit me!!
I had a old globe stand in the closet patiently waiting for my next garage sale...
Made of heavy cast iron but It was missing it's globe...
Great number details...
A fragment of the old globe workings still attached...
Charming claw feet...
I wondered if my old glass float would fit inside the antique globe stand...
and it did!
Could I marry the two pieces together??
I used the existing float rope
and tied it to the stand...
Before,
when the glass float was sitting on a table,
it never really shined...
but now it glows in the sunlight!
I'm so pleased with the results...
I shopped my own house
and created this unique piece
with items I found at
the flea market (glass float)
and an antique store (globe stand)...
So,
what do you think...
Masterpiece Theatre????
haha!
You saw it here first!!!
I'm so excited that I have hit almost 500 followers...
I hope you too will consider following my blog!

You fare brilliant! Perfect. And, those large floats are worth $100. I've been selling floats for years. All sizes and colors range from $10-small- to the large one you have. You got a great deal, and now it's priceless!
Have a great day.

I think these two items compliment each other perfectly. I also think you got a great deal on that glass float for the size that it is. I see small ones for just a little less than that. The globe stand is pretty amazing also.
Great job!
Kathleen
Marcy, it is perfect. I saw a bunch of those at the antique mall in Atlanta. I will have to check out the prices when I go back. I have been looking at those, but like you not sure where to put them.

Wow, sheer genius! I've wanted some of glass floats for the longest time but the ones I've seen are way too expensive. I wouldn't care if they were real or repro. By the way, I'm you newest follower.

totally and completely brilliant!! love it! You did get an amazing deal on that float- I saw smaller ones this past fall at an antique mall for $80. nice job!
You didn't miss my linky party! It's still going! :) It starts every Wednesday and I leave it open until Friday afternoon. Room makeovers, furniture transformations, and thrifty finds. Come on over!
This is one of the coolest things I have ever seen in my life! I wish it was mine! Congrats on your big milestone!
What a fantastic idea. I do beleive that is an older float. It has so many bubbles in it. ~~Sherry~~
Marcy, The pieces were made for each other...perfect. I love the color of your float and it sure looks like an old one to me.
Great idea!

Masterpiece Theatre is right! Marcy, these two pieces were meant for one another. Absolutely stunning. I did notice you said the globe stand was just waiting for your next garage sale. Have to tell you, if it is an example of what you have at garage sales....I will drive from Phoenix and wait in line. So please let me know a couple of days in advance. :) Have a great weekend!
Brilliant and stunning!
Seems we are watching the same parties and linking at just about the same time to each one! I've seen you at Chic on a Shoestring, Shabby Nest, and FIngerprints on the Fridge. So glad I clicked on your link b/c this is amazing! I've never heard/seen a glass float, but I probably would have bought one too. However, I would never have known what to do with it! This might be the coolest creation I've seen in a long time. Really nice job!

I love this! What a perfect use for the globe stand (which even on it's own is beautiful). The float is very cool, something I don't see here in Missouri! I just love the way the sun shines through it. A perfect piece of art!!

You are a genius!
You are so clever! I may have to copy this idea. Thank you for inviting me to your blog this evening. I will be a new follower!
I am having such fun this evening meeting and visiting with the followers and friends of my new friend Kim at SavvySouthernStyle. How kind that was for her to post such nice comments.
I am getting quite a quick lesson in how to find fabulous blogs this evening, and yours is one of them! Looking forward to watching your posts. Love your dining and living room by the way.
:)
Love your glass float, and what a great idea to use the globe stand. You have a lovely blog and I'm glad I found you. I really enjoy your pictures and have a love for all the same types of vintage items you have shown.
And it just could not be any more perfect than that!
LOOOOOVE your old float!!!
And it looks like an old one, too.

Wow! I've never heard of a glass float before! It looks wonderful in your globe stand. I would be worried my knot wouldn't hold! I'm sure yours is tight and perfect. Great idea!
That was a great price for that float! I love that you put it in the stand and it now can sparkle with the light. Beautiful!

I happen to collect & sell glass fishing floats. It's actually my passion! That's a nice, authentic float & you got a good deal on it. It's Japanese & at least 40 years old!! That's a great way to display it. Having over 300 in my collection, I am always having to be creative with ways to showcase them throughout my house. I don't have anything like what you have, but it gives me an idea on what I could potentially do!
BTW...I found you on Funky Junk Interiors!
Kamichia @ Glass Float Junkie
LOVE your glass float Marcy! I think it was a great price and how awesome that you thought of the globe stand and it worked perfectly!
What a clever idea. The glass float captures and reflects the light beautifully now, it looks like a different object altogether.
What a great idea! I have never seen one of those floats in person before. I'll have to be on the lookout for one.
Such a serendipitious match-up! I have an old glass float--complete with barnacles at our beach house, The Breeze Inn on Tybee Island, GA., but mine is just sitting on a bookshelf, hiding it's magic. Now I'll see if I can't steal your idea and find a globe stand!
Gorgeous!
I'm absolutely in love with it!!!
What a great way to display it! I bought my grandmother a (smaller I think) reproduction one of these for her birthday.
This is soooo cool. I can't believe the two go together so well. Great way to work it into your decor.
Beautiful marriage! I love antique floats, yours definately looks vintage! For $20 I think you got a real steal.
~Danylle
