You know how much I love silverplate...
I can't seem to get enough!
I'm especially fond of Antique Silver Water pitchers...
These lidded beauties are generally called Tankards!
Ornate etching of flowers and nature
can make my heart skip a beat....

just look at this lid....
The handle and spout have a raised floral pattern...
This water tankard has a seashell pattern around the rim...
The body of this pitcher is rather simple
but elegant none the less..
The handle is beautifully ornate
and a nice contrast against the plain body...
By far, my favorite is the Victorian tankard shown above...
It's marked "Quadruple Plate" silver.
I did a bit of research on "Quadruple Plate" and found a few discrepancies as to its meaning. Some silver experts believe there are four layers of silver plate on the silver piece. However, other's believe that a single plating used 4 times as much 'pure silver' in the process. The term "Quadruple Plate" was not used after about 1900. So, if you have a piece marked Quadruple Plate, you know it's very old.

As is the body of the tankard...
I have never polished this piece
I simply love the dark patina that comes with time...
The inside is porcelain or enamel...
Some rust and a few bumps and bruises inside...
Imperfections to the liners don't bother me
since I don't use my tankards to serve water.
I like to use my tankards to display garden roses...
To prevent further damage to the interior and to prevent any leaks, I like to line my silver vessels with a plastic cup. This plastic cup is from a fast food place...
It fits perfectly inside the silver tankard!
I cut some amazing pink roses from my garden. I planted a dozen or two dozen (who's counting?) pink roses last spring... They are FINALLY blooming and I am enjoying them so!!
Add water and slip the plastic container into the silver tankard...
You can't even see it!
Another liner idea is a tennis ball container...
Fits perfect and makes good use of a disposable plastic container...
Add water and garden flowers....
I like to place these floral arrangements in bedrooms...
These blooms can scent an entire room!
Tankards can be found at flea markets, antique stores, estate sales and thrift stores. I love the generous size. Perfect to hold garden roses or a store bought bouquet! Oh, and I love dried hydrangeas in them too!

Oh, they are so delicious and your roses are gorgeous!!! I never knew the term 'tankard'. My dad has a number of these that he won in amateur golf (before I came along!) and I've been trying to get him to part with them. They are all engraved and not quite as pretty as yours, but special nonetheless :)

Hi Marcy, I just had to stop over to find out what Tankards are, and now I know. They're beautiful! I really love the added specialness with the flowers. I do that also, set a cup or glass inside a rustic vase etc. to hold flowers so it won't leak. Your collection is just beautiful and I love your style. Your Cali neighbor tami
Those are so gorgeous...your roses look beautiful arranged in them!!!! I would love to be able to cut roses in my garden right now. However it's a bit chilly so all we have is mums! LOL

Beautiful silver tankerds! I've not heard that before, love to learn new terms. I love the one you showed using the tennis ball casing the most. I love the simplicity of its design with just a hint of elegance. They are all gorgeous though. Great tip on the inserts too. I have a silver pitcher I'd like to use for flowers, now I can. Marcy, no question that I'm dreaming of finding some of these beautiful tankards. I'm taken with the wonderful shapes and details of the spouts, handles, lids, . . . Well, I just think these are fabulous! Like you, I like to use my old pieces for flowers. I learned the hard way that I need to slip a glass or plastic container into metal pieces that I want to use as a flower vase. ;-)

Your basket in the previous post reminds me of a basket I have. Mine was used to haul amunition in. It has old leather handles, like yours. LOVE it. One of my favorite pieces ever.

About the antique mirror frame color you asked about- the color was already there when I bought the mirrors- I didn't paint either of them- but they are very similar colors- one is just a bit more green than the other and I agree, a wreath over the mirror would be beautiful too! :)
