Seasonal Decor vs. Collections ~

I've learned something about my decorating style over the past two weeks... Did you notice I haven't posted? I've been frustrated on what to blog...

Although I love looking at Fall decorating, I just can't seem to make it happen in my own home...

Sure, I bought a pumpkin..
love the white ones...
Look, I even plopped one in an urn...

Fall decor complete, CHECK!

I would love to blame it on the weather... it's really hard to get into "Fall" decorating when it's over 80 degrees.  Can I make a confession?

I AM NOT A SEASONAL DECORATOR....

Whew, I said it....

Are you totally judging me now???

Will you ever come back to my blog?
{please do}

For me, I don't have the time or the energy to season it up.  Not that my life is so wonderful or so glamorous.  It's just that seasonal decorating requires lots of creativity, lots of storage, and by the time I would get my act together, the season would be over...

I was thinking about holding this post (Beaded Fruit) until Christmas... Certainly, I could get all fancy telling you that these jeweled beauties are part of my "Christmas" decor... but their not.

I love beaded fruit every day of the year!
but only the vintage stuff...

I have been collecting beaded or jeweled fruit for about 10 years. I have never found any locally. All my fruit has been purchased on Ebay.

This is rather tricky because, just like the grocery store...
there's good fruit and there's bad fruit!

I'll show you some examples of the yummy ones...

Vintage fruit was a homemade craft in the 1960's and early 70's... Back then, you could buy kits that contained everything you would need to make your jeweled fruit...the foam centers, beads and pins. Sometimes, you can find the unopened kits on Ebay!

I have lemons, pineapples, grapes, peaches, bananas, limes, plums
...oh my!

Look at these yummy strawberries...

I have found that some Ebay sellers list their fruit as "vintage" when it is in fact new. If you decide to collect, be sure your fruit has pins! Vintage fruit never has glued beads!

Some fruit has sequins under each bead. This makes the fruit look extra pretty and all jeweled up!

I have two other pineapples but this one is much larger. This pineapple wasn't made very well because also seems to loose pins and beads all the time!

I found this pumpkin a couple of years ago.
{Ah-ha!! Seasonal decor!}

The silver punch bowl was purchased at a local flea market to hold my growing collection of beaded fruit... I originally purchased just the silver bowl. About a month later, the same seller sold me the ladle.

Would you like to start a collection of vintage beaded fruit?
I have some extra fruit that keeps falling out of my silver bowl.

If you want an instant collection,
I've listed a 13 piece set HERE

(THIS SET IS NOW SOLD, THANK YOU!)

Thanks for stopping by! Have a wonderful week!

I would love to hear from you if you have time to comment! :)

Hi,
I know exactly what you mean, sometimes it can be just way too much work to decorate for every season. This year Halloween has been a bit forgotten in my house, my poor kids! ;( I do decorate a bit for Christmas though, but that's about it. I love your vintage jeweled fruit, it's fabulous and your white pumpkin is perfect in your silver urn.
Your home is gorgeous with or without holiday decorations up. :0)
Have a great day.
Sincerely,
Melinda

I used to decorate like crazy for all the holidays....but the older I get, I keep simplifying it...your fruit bowl is lovely....and very much like a cornacorpia!!

The beaded fruit are SO cute!

I've always liked the look of seasonal/holiday decorating... but I also love the way I have my house decorated all the time.

So I've decided to have a couple areas that I will use seasonal & holiday decor that I will switch up monthly and leave the rest of the house as is.

The front porch will be purely seasonal...no holiday.

You are a woman after my own heart. I'm not much on seasonal decorating either, especially when it comes to fall. Last year, my first fall as a blogger, I tried (all the blogging pressure like Lou Cinda said) but I became frustrated and gave up. Fall colors just don't work with the pastel colors I like. You can only do so much with white pumpkins, ya know? I'm also not one to be changing stuff around all the time. Once I get things how I like them, they usually stay that way.

Ahhhh....beaded fruit. I made a bunch of that stuff back in the time frame you mentioned. It was the "good" kind with the pins and sequins. All these years later, I still have very vivid memories of how sore my fingertips got from pushing all those pins! lol.

Finally--someone else who blogs that isn't a seasonal decorator. I'm with you. I just don't have the time or the storage. I sure do love looking at everyone else's seasonal decorating. It's just not my thing. I'll keep coming back...even if you don't do seasonal decorating (;

I love the way you decorate regardless of the season. And those beaded fruit bring back so many memories. I Love them! They are so jewel~like. My mom bought a huge ziplock bag full of beaded fruit from a garage sale back in the 80's. She set them in a large gold rimmed fruit embossed milk glass bowl. They set on our dining room table for years. Thanks for the memories. ~Ames

I love your honesty! I've just been quiet through this whole fall-decorating-bloggie thing :) I do decorate for Christmas, and I keep a wreath on the door, but that is the extent of it for seasonal decorating! Just not my thing. Your vintage fruit is so incredible- I've never seen any! I'd rather have a cool collection than seasonal decor any day!

I'm not too much into seasonal decorating anymore. I have a few pumpkins on the porch and a wreath.

I like your beaded fruits. I didn't know there was such a treasure. What a great collection you have.

I'm laughing b/c this could be my confession!
Fun to look at...not so fun to do and store.
Your fruit will work for all holidays!

The beginning of your post made me laugh! I've spent the past day and a half trying to come up with Halloween posts, and I think I've just decided that I'm just not someone who decorates for that holiday.

Thanks for the informative and fun post on beaded fruit! I never knew anything about it actually, and it really is very pretty.

PS - Thanks for stopping by and leaving me a comment on my blog.

Seasonal decor - ugh ...! I only did it this year as I was hosting the family for Thanksgiving! LOVE your beaded fruit ~ so pretty! Welcome back!

I had to smile at your confession. Although I do like to pull out seasonal decorations, sometimes it gets to be a bit much. Some years I don't do anything, then other years I'm motivated to pull things out. I spent most of the weekend pulling out the Halloween decorations and getting things put out as I wanted. I couldn't seem to get motivated this year though. I finally settled on what I wanted to do, but it took much longer than was reasonable. LOL My husband commented that if I didn't have so many choices it wouldn't be so difficult. Well, you know there is a lot to be said about simplicity.
I love your white pumpkin in the urn!!!
Perhaps that's what'll do next year. Thanks for sharing. ~ sarah

I do some fall arrangements for fall, but I don't do Halloween especially since my kids are gone and I get no trick or treaters. Love your beaded fruit collection, but really love that punch bowl.

I'm not doing much this year mostly because all my stuff is in storage but I'm feeling more minimalist right now anyhow. Your house looks perfect just as is!

What a wonderful collection of beaded fruit you have. I've never seen so many different varieties.

That beaded fruit is gorgeous. And the silver punch bowl is to die for!!!! I've had years when I didn't decorate for certain holidays. But for the most part I do. I have an 11 year old son so I gotta do Halloween.

Your vintage fruit is lovely and you don't need to be ashamed of not being a seasonal decorator -- not everyone is!! I don't have a lot of "set arounds" but I do fill the tabletop bowls with pumpkins and bittersweet or apples -- that's my fall decorating. Just a touch -- just a touch and not overwhelming!

The Cozy Cape said...

I do a little seasonal decorating here and there but I have only put one thing out this year for Fall, if that tells you anything! I do Christmas more than Fall because I just love that holiday... but like you, by the time I get my act together, it's time for the next season. Plus, as pretty as mums look, I just can't get myself to by them, b/c as soon as they get wet, they turn brown-- and brown isn't the look I'm going for after I've just spent my hard earned money on them. No shame in that!

I remember doing these with te beads and straight pins when I was a kid. Such lovely ones you have...that pumpkin is especially lovely :)

Marcy, Can you believe I made beaded fruit from a kit when I was a child? I would love to have them now. Your collection is wonderful and the fruit looks great in the silver bowl.
Hugs, Sherry

Hi Marcy, good for you, don't cave to pressure of others. Your home is gorgeous, and living in SoCal you don't have the stimulus that some of the rest of us do. I look forward to the seasonal changes here in Missouri, and my decor just changes along with it. I also like to change things up and use different colors. But you have beauty there that most of us aren't having. Love your fruit and that beaded pumpkin! Thanks so much for linking up with VIF. great post!!!
xo,
Debra

You're too funny, if my fall decor looked as smashing as your white pumpkin in that fabulous urn, I'd call it done as well. Love it and the bamboo shelf it's sitting on too.
